S2E4 (jan 1, 1918 – jul 17, 1918)

Description:

Opens with the title card "1918".

Takes place over at least 5 days, probably starting before March 31 (Easter), as Sybil refers to the Easter Rising in 1916 as "the rising in Dublin last Easter". The timeline for this episode is difficult to work out - the food kitchen plot and Ethel plot seem to span several weeks at least, but the other plots seem to take no more than a week or two, and they are all interwoven.

-Edith asks Mary to sing for the concert. Mary talks to Dowager about Lavinia. Mrs. Crawley and Lady Grantham quarrel. Mrs. Byrd feeds a wounded veteran. Matthew and William go on patrol.
-Mr. Bates is revealed to be working in a pub. Daisy says William and Matthew should have arrived by now.
- Anna talks to Lord Grantham about Mr. Bates. Mrs. Patmore and Daisy discover Mrs. Byrd's soup kitchen. Daisy tells Edith Matthew and William are missing. Mrs. Patmore puts food aside in special storage. Ethel is caught in flagrante. Molesley agrees to dress Lord Grantham.
-Lord Grantham visits Bates. O'Brien sees the soup kitchen. Bates returns to Downton. Molesley does not get to dress Lord Grantham. Edith tells Mary Matthew is missing.
-Lady Grantham discovers the soup kitchen, apparently a week after O'Brien did so. Clarkson tells off Thomas for being imperious with the staff. Convalescent home concert. Ethel turns up at the back door and says she is pregnant.
