Opens with the title card "July 1914." Britain declared war on Germany at 11:00 PM August 4, 1914.

1: Family returns to Downton. Lady Mary to stay on with Aunt Rosamund for "a couple weeks".
-:Dr. Clarkson visits Lady Grantham. Evelyn Napier visits Lady Mary.
-:Lady Grantham visits Dowager, who suspects her maid will give notice. Lord Grantham talks to Matthew about the baby and entail.
-:Mrs. Patmore burns herself preparing luncheon
-:"I expect you've had time to consider the contents of that letter." likely at least a day after letter was presented. Mary returns to Downton. Dowager reveals her lady's maid has given notice. Lord Grantham talks to Mrs. Patmore. Mrs. Bird is "coming over tomorrow." Lady Mary and Matthew fight.
-Mrs. Bird comes to Downton. Mrs. Patmore and Anna to leave on the 9 o'clock train "tomorrow". Telephone man comes.
-Mrs. Patmore and Anna go to London, to Moorfields Eye Hospital. "We'll keep her in for a week. You can collect her next Friday." Daisy sabotages servants' dinner. Thomas caught with Carson's wallet.

-Telephone man returns. Lady Sybil expresses disappointment over lack of response to Gwen's application. Gwen Dawson interviews. Anna talks to Mrs. Bates.
-Thomas talks to Dr. Clarkson.
-Mrs. Patmore returns. Anna tells Lord Grantham what she learned in London. Lady Grantham miscarries. Thomas and William fight.
-July 5. Garden party. War announced.


Based on the time already elapsed during the month, Mrs. Patmore is released from the hospital on either Friday July 24 or 31, most likely 24 as Mrs. Patmore is no longer wearing the glasses, which she was to wear for a week, at the time of the garden party.
