Lynchings (jan 1, 1882 – dec 1, 1968)

Description:

Lynchings were a cruel way in which people were tortured and killed for various reasons. In the late 19th century, and heading into the 20th century, lots of lynchings of Black people were because of the racial tensions that existed between them and the White population. Here, the NAACP (12) exhibits some statistics of Lynchings within the U.S., "Lynchings were becoming a popular way of resolving some of the anger that whites had in relation to the free blacks," (NAACP 1).

From 1882-1968, 4,743 lynchings occurred in the United States. Of these people that were lynched 3,446 were black. The blacks lynched accounted for 72.7% of the people lynched.

(12) The NAACP is an organization that works for the equality of African Americans.
