greek civil war (dec 3, 1944 – oct 16, 1949)

2 guerilla groups in greece were trying t resiste the germans
communist
--> national liberation front- national popular liberation army
british sponsered
--> greek national democratic army
at the end of nazi operations, the communists set up a provisional government under british auspices which removed the king from his throne
goverment collapsed when communists refused to disband their guerilla force resulting in a civil war
sep 1946: another election was held and royalist faction was returned to power
communist conducted full scale warfare and the government and british spondered group were overwhelmed
they sent a call to the us for help
stalin was not apart of the greek communists as he was upholding his end of the percentages agreement
it was yugoslavia led by their leader tito
when tito and stalin had a falling out in 1948, the greek communists decided to support stalin resulting in the withdrawal of support from tito
collapse of the government in greece and their defeat in 1949
