Description:
ussr had been placing pressure on the government of turkey to rant free access to soviet ships through the straits connecting the black sea to the mediterranean
7 august 1946: ussr wanted an international conference to discuss the ownership of the straits
began a series of naval manoeuvres in the black sea
dispatched a substancial number of troops to the balkans as a show of force to the turkish governement
turkish appealed to the west for aid
20 august 1946: truman dispatched naval task force to the area
turkish was assured and gave a flat rejection to soviet demands
october 9: britain and us sent notes to the soviets reaffriming their support for turkish independence
moscow relented their demands
