postdam conference (jul 17, 1945 – aug 2, 1945)

Description:

final agreement that germany would be divided into 4 occupation zones

countries could demand as much or as little reparations as they wanted from each zone

ussr was entitled to take an additional 10% of industril equipment from the western zones to be brought back to the ussr

germany would be run by an allied control council made of commanders of the 4 zones pf the occupation

elections set up for a further date

henry truman was in attendance

unsustainable division of responsibility - for the transitions period became the basis for permanent arrangements

although both us and ussr was publicly advocated a unified germany, neithet was willing to risk that the new germany should fall into the sphere of influence
