second front controversy (jun 1, 1942 – jan 1, 1944)
Description:
after the defeat of france the ussr was the only one bearing the brunt of the nazi attacks although they had large amounts of aid from the lend lease policy
stalin thus wanted to open a second front in france which would:
force hitler to divert troops from the eastern front and relieve the burden of the red army
it would allowed the allies to be in a position to gradually encircle germany and force the war into german soil
western allies not prepared to launch any invasion as they had only entered the war in december 1941
stalin thought that the west was unwilling to help the ussr and wanted the both of them to weaken each other for their own benefits
