Jacobean Age (1603-25) (jan 1, 1603 – jan 1, 1625)
Description:
Brought literature (especially drama) closer to the Crown and the interests of upper classes, since James became patron to London's major acting companies early on. Literary works (esp. tragedies) often dealing with the fear that the social order might fall apart, since the Scientific Revolution (beginning approx. in the middle of the 16th century), had begun dismantling some of the common beliefs about the natural world, and social order was not viewed as separate from the natural one.
Literary taste: moved away from the taste for elaborate ornamentation of the Elizabethans, towards less orchestrated rhythms of colloquial speech. Among newly favored genres are the prose essay (popularized e.g. by Bacon) and satire.
