Description:
Corn: corn quickly became a massive food source and today is the third most important crop worldwide. It provided completely new nutrition which allowed them to live longer
Disease: The diseases that spread as a consequence of the slave trade killed ~ half of the population (smallpox, measels, malaria)
Effects of conquest and epidemics:
1. undermined distinct culture and linguistic groups: forcing of relocation, labeling and diseases
2. The gradual elimination of Amerindian elites
3. Suffering amongst native commoners: tribute payments, forced labor, loss of traditional land rights
