Not many people know that there was a third contender for the race to the South Pole. While Admusden and Scott were racing, Nobu Shirase was making achievements. On his first attempt, he didn't make it that far so he had to spend winter in Australia. On his second attempt, he decided to try to be the first person to reach the North Pole but turned around when he heard Americans had already done it.Added to timeline:
