Battle of Marathon (jan 1, 478 BC – jan 1, 404 BC)
Description:
The Battle of Marathon took place in Marathon, Greece. This was a battle between Persian forces and citizens of Athens. This battle was the culmination of the first Persian attempt to gain control of Greece, but ended in defeat for the Persians as Greece inflicted a crushing defeat turning the tide of the Greco-Persian Wars. The area surrounding Marathon was mountinous with marshes that prevented the Persian cavilry from joining the infantry. This battle was the turning point in which the Greeks showed they could win battles without major Spartian assistance, and has been an influential point in Western Culture.
