Battle of Plataea (jan 1, 388 BC – jan 1, 30)
Description:
The battle of Plataea was the final nail in the coffin when it comes to the Persian wars. Before the battle, the combined Greek navy defeated the Persian fleet at the battle of Salamis, preventing an invasion of the Peloponnese. The Greeks gathered a great army, by ancient standards, and marched on the Persian army who had set up a fortified camp near Plataea in Boeotia. The Greeks refused to meet the Persians for 11 days because the land around the camp was vulnerable to flanking by cavalry. The Greek battle line temporarily disrupted after a supply line got attacked. The Persian general thought the Greeks were retreating, ordered his army to attack and got slaughtered by Greek heavy infantry.
