First Sino-Japanese War (aug 1, 1894 – apr 17, 1895)
Description:
- After strengthening during the 1870s, Japan was determined to open Korea before the Europeans
- Took over Korea and set up a government, ending Korea's status as a protectorate of Qing China
- Landed in Busan and went North
-Chinese fleet lost because they made military blunders AND because the southern fleet refused to help (in revenge of what happened years prior)
Treaty of Shimonoseki
- Ceded Taiwan to Japan
- established Korean independence
- ceded Liaodong peninsula (given back after pressure from west)
- Indemnity of 360 million yen (4x Japan's annual budget
This would greatly hurt China because they wouldn't be able to establish a gold standard until 1940s
