William befriends Lanfranc (jan 1, 1048 – dec 30, 1049)
Description:
By the end of the 1040s, if not before, Lanfranc had become William's spiritual mentor. William, for reasons that remain obscure, destroyed one of Bec's estates and ordered Lanfranc into Exile. As the latter was leaving, he chanced to encounter the duke on the road, and (thanks to an icebreaker occasioned by Lanfranc's amusingly useless horse) all was forgiven and Lanfranc became William's most trusted advisor.
