Reagan Presidency (jan 21, 1981 – jan 20, 1989)
Description:
Was a Republican. Marks the rise of the "new right." First few days "Fixes" Carter's mistakes by freeing hostages in Tehran, Iran (illegally). Comes across as saving the country and being powerful and effective
Frames himself as very anti-communist. Reagan built up the military, but particularly nuclear capability and missile defense. Also religiously conservative. Against abortion and such.
Argued that American prosperity will be achieved through tax cuts and a decrease in federal spending,
increasing power in private sectors. Wealthy upper class benefitted, poor suffered. Cutting taxes would lead to growth in receipts which would help the economy grow quickly. Country's deficit increased greatly
