Harding Presidency (jan 21, 1921 – jan 20, 1923)
Description:
Was a Republican. Mostly economic policy.
Ran on a platform of a "return to normalcy." Focused a lot on restricting immigration in response to WW1 fear of foreigners and communism (b/c of Russian Rev). Removed wartime restrictions on business and re-implemented tariffs. Didn't support workers' rights, being a Republican. Rs had both house and senate, so they could do whatever. Focuses on "America First," in contrast to Wilson's international peace initiatives. Reduces US involvement abroad. Pivoting away from imperialism. Was very corrupt. Harding appointed a lot of his personal friends to positions they weren't qualified for (nicknamed "the ohio gang"). Some of them were tho, like Herbert Hoover (commerce) and Andrew Mellon (treasury). Harding dies midway through his term (1923), and his VP Calvin Coolidge becomes pres.
