Dakota War (aug 17, 1862 – dec 26, 1862)
Description:
Dakota Nation clashed with white settlers in MI and DA. Overhunting and farming had pushed many Dakota into poverty. The population was rapidly expanding making the problem worse. 4 young Sioux men killed 5 settlers. In the face of American retaliation, the Sioux decided to fight before all was lost. Killed 31 settlers and 21 soldiers at a nearby post. The governor of MI called the militia and several thousand attacked the Sioux. Broke the last of the native resistance at the Battle of Wood Lake. 2,000 Dakota taken prisoner, 303 sentences to hang. Lincoln commuted the sentences of all but 38. Dakota lost much of their land and were moved farther west. Those who had fled were hunted down and put on reservations as well. In 1836 the military surrounded a camp of Dakota and killed 300 and burned the village.
