Roosevelt Corollary to Monroe Doctrine (jan 1, 1904 – dec 1, 1934)

Description:

In the early 20th century, many European countries started seeking to collect on debts owed to them by Latin American countries. Some nations, such as Britain, even sent battleships to force the Latin American countries to repay their debts. Seeing this as a violation of the Monroe Doctrine, President Roosevelt declared that the U.S. would mediate the collection of debts for European countries so that Europeans would not have to directly intervene in the Western Hemisphere. This policy (declared in 1904) became known as the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine, and it was then used for years to justify the dispatchment of American forces to Latin American countries, which worsened the United States’ relations with those countries.
