International Darwinism; Imperialism; Missionaries (jan 1, 1885 – nov 11, 1919)

Description:

International Darwinism was the application of Darwin’s theory of evolution on a global scale, such that several nations began to view the acquisition of territories as a way to demonstrate their “superiority” and dominance. American expansionists set their sights on the Caribbean, Central America, and the Pacific islands, but this resurgence of imperialism was anything but exclusive to the United States. Other countries such as France, Germany, Russia, Britain, and Japan joined in on the competition to acquire new territories. These imperialistic intentions went hand-in-hand with the growth of missionary activity, since religious leaders like Reverend Josiah Strong argued that as part of the “superior nation,” Protestant Americans had a duty to colonize the less fortunate regions of the world and spread Christianity.
