Missouri Compromise (mar 16, 1819 – mar 16, 1819)
Description:
Missouri was a state with a large slave population and when it bid for statehood, set alarm to the north because the political balance would ultimately be tipped into the South favor. the Louisiana Purchase bought Missouri and it was one of the first to apply for statehood. Many worried that others would also apply for statehood. James Tallmadge from New York proposed an amendment to the bill for Missouri's admission. This amendment would include prohibition for the further introduction of slaves into Missouri and the children of Missouri slaves to be emancipated at the age of 25. If this amendment was adopted, slavery in Missouri would have gradually eliminated. The Senate defeated the amendment as they saw angered Southerners to abolish slavery in all states. Clay's proposals consisted of a majority of support for three bills that came together as a compromise. These include: to admit Missouri as a slaveholding State, too admitted Maine as a free state, and to prohibit slavery in the rest of the Louisiana Territory north of the latitude 36° 30'. As a result of Clay's proposals, the sectional feelings on slavery calms down but the Era of Good Feelings was no longer exists because of the heavy damage after the political crisis Americans being torn between nationalism (loyalty to the Union) and sectionalism (loyalty to the region).
