Temperance Movement (jan 1, 1890 – jan 16, 1919)
Description:
Many Progressives disagreed on the issue of temperance and prohibition. Urban progressives generally didn’t support the temperance movement, even though saloons were often the local gathering spots for political machines. On the other hand, Progressives in rural areas believed that the prohibition of alcohol would increase morality in society and vanquish much of the corruption in government in one fell swoop. They succeeded in convincing two-thirds of the states to ban the sale of liquor by 1915. More importantly, on January 16, 1919, the 18th Amendment was ratified, which prohibited "the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors" within the U.S. or even as exports
