Whiskey Rebellion (feb 1, 1791 – feb 1, 1794)

Description:

When Hamilton’s financial plan was accepted, his proposed tariffs was lowered. As such, he attained the passing of excise taxes on several goods, most notably whiskey, to gain more revenue for the federal government. Farmers along the Western frontier refused to pay the whiskey tax by attacking tax collectors, threatening the stability of the nation. In order to restore order and solidify the credibility of the federal government and the executive branch, Washington responded with an impressive show of force. He gave Hamilton command of 150,000 militiamen to threaten the Whiskey Rebellion into submission. This act was controversial. Praise was mostly among those of the East who preferred it over the lack of action in Shay’s Rebellion while resentment was mostly among those in the West who thought it was an unmerited and extreme response against the people.
