Municipal Reform (jan 1, 1896 – jan 1, 1916)
Description:
One of the main goals of the progressives was to better they are local lives and to have municipal reforms. Some mayors prioritized making local living conditions better for the people such as mayor of Toledo Ohio in 1897, Samuel M “Golden rule” Jones, who was known for his golden rule and for all the reforms but were made under his leadership. Some of the changes that he made included making kindergartens free, creating local public playgrounds, and night schools. Reforms were also done in order to take the power away from city bosses and private companies. This led to cities being able to own most of their power plants, public transportations, and gas lines. Progressives also fought for the public being able to vote for the people who control the local city department's and what proved to be even more effective than this was a Commission plan in which an expert manager would overlook the work of several different city departments.
