The Muckrakers (jan 1, 1890 – jan 1, 1910)

Description:

In order to inform the public about scandals that were occurring in The United States, primarily the issues involving politics or labor, magazines and newspapers would publish these kinds of stories which gained a lot of popularity and the writers who wrote these were known as muckrakers. Henry Demarest Lloyd Was one of the first muckrakers and he wrote articles the exposed Standard Oil and the corrupt oil monopoly that they used. Muckraking came in several forms such as magazines and books, such as McClure’s magazine which had several muckraking stories. Books were also published which would have popular muckraking articles and some were novels such as The Financier and The Titan, written by Theodore Dreiser, in which he exposed industrialists and their ruthless practices. After 1910 muckraking became less popular because writers found it inconsistent and the companies that they were exposing began to threaten the writers.
