Nat Turner (aug 21, 1831 – aug 23, 1831)
Description:
Nat Turner was a Virginia slave that led a slave uprising against whites in which 55 whites were killed. Whites slaughtered hundreds of African Americans in barbaric fashion in revenge, and put down the uprising. There had been some anti-slavery sentiment and debate in the South before this incident. In return, hundreds of slaves were killed by whites. This event was significant because his revolt strengthened Southern whites' anti-slavery sentiments and led to new repressive laws restricting slaves' schooling, movement, and assembly.
