War with Mexico: Immediate Causes of the War (POL)(WOR) (jan 1, 1846 – jan 1, 1848)
Description:
One of the immediate causes of the war with Mexico was the decision by President James K Polk to send John Slidell a piece of land that Mexico had marked as their own.. His objective was to convince Mexico to sell the territory as New Mexico and California to America. After failing, he would decide that all land north of the Rio Grande would become territory of the United States and sent this declaration to General Zachary Taylor who marched into the land in order to take it from Mexico, who will fight back leading to a small conflict that last 11 American soldiers dead. This conflict was used as an excuse by Polk to wage war against Mexico and therefore gain the land which he so desired. In response to this, many antiwar politicians like Abraham Lincoln would attempt to explain to the Senate and the president that word was not the best option and that it would lead to unnecessary bloodshed And that the acquisition of this new land would destroy the delicate political violence between the north and the south.
