Awakening of Reform: Social Gospel (jan 1, 1880 – jan 1, 1899)
Description:
During the 1880s and 1890s there was a good amount of Protestants who espoused the cause of social justice for the poor. They followed the social gospel which highlighted the importance of applying Christian principles to various problems. a Baptist Minister from New York by the name of Walter Rauschenbusch led the social gospel movement. He worked in a poverty-stricken neighborhood called Hell's Kitchen. This led him to write many books that helped fight for the cause of social justice.
