White Society: (jul 1, 1832 – sep 1, 1878)

Description:

Planter aristocracy, poor whites, Mountain people: At the top of souther white society were the Planters who were the most wealthy. The southern upper-class aristocracy was made up planters with many slaves and thousands of acres of land. Below the planters there were poor whites who were too poor to own slaves and made up most of the southern population. The Mountain people were isolated from the rest of the south and were not pro slavery, they were loyal to the union.
