Black Migration to Northern Cities (jan 1, 1890 – jan 1, 1900)

Description:

An increasing number of black people started moving to northern cities for employment opportunities and greater freedom. Most African Americans moved to Chicago, Philadelphia and New York City. Even though they still faced discrimination in the North, African Americans built communities and developed a small middle class consisting of teachers, attorneys, and small business owners. This middle class provided leadership in forming mutual aid societies, lodges and women's clubs.
