Underground Railroad (aug 8, 1810 – jan 1, 1850)

Description:

The Underground Railroad was a network of former slaves, free blacks, and white abolitionists all helping slaves escape to freedom in Canada or in the Northern states. Harriet Tubman, an escaped slave herself, was one of the most famous leaders of this underground railroad, as she risked her freedom multiple times by making around nineteen trips back into the South to help about 300 enslaved African-Americans escape to freedom; during the Civil War, Tubman continued her work towards the abolition of slavery. Additionally, fugitive slaves were protected from slave catchers in the North by surveillance committees that were organized by abolitionists and free blacks.
