Open Door Policy in China: spheres of influence; Boxer Rebellion; Hay’s second round of notes (jan 1, 1899 – jan 1, 1901)
Description:
Countries such as Russia, Japan, France, Germany, Britain, and some Asian countries had spheres of influence in China, meaning they had intense influence in Chinese trade and Investments within the section of China that they claimed to oversee. In order to maintain their sphere of influence, the United States asked China to accept an open door policy, which would divide China evenly into sections to grant to different countries as their own sphere of influence. While it was not directly rejected, the proposal did not receive much traction. As a result of this and increasing nationalism and xenophobia in China, a secret society of Chinese nationalists, the Boxers, attacked spheres of influence in China, murdering Christian missionaries. The United States sent troops to attempt to end this Boxer Rebellion then forcing the Chinese to pay for it.
