The Phillipine question (jan 1, 1898 – jan 1, 1904)
Description:
The case of the Philippines caused intense debates between Anti-Imperialist who opposed annexing the Philippines and imperialists who supported it. Anti-Imperialist were therefore against the ratification of the Treaty of Paris, which had a provision to allow the United States to acquire the Philippines. They believed that the United States should not take possession of an already populated area with people of a different race and established culture. However, the Treaty of Paris was approved, outraging Filipinos, who were hoping for independence from Spain and recognition as a country.
