Women's Role During The Civil War (jan 1, 1861 – jan 1, 1865)

Description:

Women's roles in many aspects of society increased during the Civil War. The federal government hired thousands of sewing women who were contracted to make uniforms for Union Soldier. Thousands more filled jobs in agriculture, industry and the government that were traditionally held by men. Also, the government established the U.S. Sanitary Commission through which thousands of women volunteered funds and assistance through hundreds of local chapters across the North. They hosted fund raising fairs, coordinated sewing and knitting circles, rolled bandages and sent supplies to the front lines. Also northern women almost completely replaced men as military nurses and doctors, and were led by Clara Barton, Mary Ann Bickerdyke and Dr. Mary Walker.

Although not as common, some women played a far more active role in the war. For example, some women such as Rose Greenhow gathered information for military and political leaders. Harriet Tubman gathered intelligence in South Carolina.
