Boss and Machine Politics: Political machine (POL, SOC) (mar 5, 1870 – mar 5, 1915)
Description:
Many major cities held a group of politicians known as political machines. These machines had bosses that tended to run political campaigns and give their most loyal supporters privileges and jobs at his side. Some of these political machines often started as community gatherings to discuss the needs of businesses and the people and would proceed to use this organization as leverage for votes. Most of these political machines knew how to seem appealing in the eyes of the people. They would provide newcomers of the city with some form of welfare like bringing immigrant families a basket of food during hard times. But hidden under the surface of their charitable acts, these political machines would often steal millions of taxpayer dollars in the form of either graft or fraud, Boss Tweed being the most notorious, managed to steal 65 percent of public building funds.
