Literature and the Arts: Painting: Ashcan School (SOC) (jun 23, 1890 – jun 23, 1900)

Description:

With a great emphasis on realism by writers during the industrialization, many painters responded accordingly. For instance, Winslow Homer, utilized photographs to study human anatomy in order to produce art pieces of doctors performing surgery and produce art pieces depicting the lives of the working class. With a growing presence of social realist painters, these painters formed a group known as the “Ashcan School” and dedicated their skills to painting the everyday life of poor urban neighborhoods. During the same time, another group of artists were producing abstract art which upset many of the social realist painters.
