Living Conditions of Slaves As The Spread of Cotton Expands (jan 1, 1820 – jan 1, 1860)

Description:

Although the end of the slave trade forced plantation owners to rethink their treatment of slaves because their value had now increased, slaves were still treated brutally. Slaveholders continued to whip and sexually abuse slaves. Slaves lived in small houses with dirt floors and ate a diet of high carbs and little meat, fresh vegetables or fruits. Therefore, there was a very high mortality rate for infants and children. Also as the cotton industry expanded to the lower south, slaves were forced to move and were therefore torn away from their families.
