Barbary pirates (jun 1, 1801 – jan 1, 1805)
Description:
One of Jefferson’s major challenges was from piracy from the barbary states of north Africa. Former presidents had agreed to make tribute payments to the states. The ruler of Tripoli demanded more money. Jefferson sent a small naval fleet to the Mediterranean. Fighting in the region took place for 4 years, The American navy gained respect in these battles.
