The united states were able to obtain this by buying from the French at an extremely cheap price due to the French needing money to fight their war against Britain. Realistically speaking the U.S would have taken the territory’s no matter what, so it benefited the French to sell it. The Lewis and Clark expedition were funded by congress and a scientific exploration of the trans Mississippi west. The expedition brought a greater geographic and scientific Knowledge of the region and stronger us claims to the Oregon territory.
