The Era of Good Feelings (nov 20, 1815 – dec 1, 1825)

Description:

The years of Monroe’s presidency were characterized by a sense of patriotism, prosperity, and solidarity that indicated the nickname of the era. American people could
manage to pay minimal concern to European military and political relations during this period. During the last year of the James Madison presidency, the good feelings were induced by two activities that included
the introduction of the first U.S. defensive tariff and the creation of the second National Bank. The sense of peace and harmony, however, was deceptive. Monroe's party, the Democratic-Republicans, which implemented some of their policies, disbanded the Federalist party and took over. The Democratic-Republican party ultimately divided into two different parties, providing that a sense of political cooperation was unattainable. A somewhat unassertive nationalism was substituted for sectionalism, a commitment to the interests of territory over those of a country as a whole. The time was
full of intense arguments regarding taxes, national banks, internal adjustments, and purchases of public property. Although new problems arose, the "age" proved to be a brief pause in political and personal leadership conflicts. It is believed that from the election of 1816 to the Panic of 1819, the true good
feeling period had once existed.
