Détente (jan 1, 1967 – jan 1, 1979)
Description:
Détente was the period during the Cold War where the two superpowers decided to ease tensions against one another as a result of growing relations between President Richard Nixon and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. During this time, domestic relations would increase between the Soviets and the US as well as the signing of multiple treaties including the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (1968) and the Helsinki Accords (1975).
This time period of détente between the superpowers was important to the war because it would start the easing of tensions between the powers-- no worries upon the arms race and having time to recollect with inner turmoil's that have sparked up. Detente can be seen as the "cold" part of the war, because it was the beginning of the tensions between the two powers, and overall the precursor to the downfall of the Soviet Union as a whole.
