Russian Invasion of Afghanistan (dec 24, 1979 – feb 15, 1989)

Description:

The Russian Invasion of Afghanistan was the Soviet Union's intervention in Afghanistan's conflict against anti-communist Muslim guerrillas during the Afghan War (1978-92) in order to protect the current socialist government in Afghanistan. Those who were anti-communist were support and aided by the US, while the struggling communist government was back by the Soviets, and eventually the war would end in stalemate.
The invasion, as well as the end of the Afghan War, was important to the war because the Soviets had failed to implement a sympathetic regime in Afghanistan, showing signs of the superpower shattering and losing its overall influence.
