Geneva Accords (Vietnam War) (apr 26, 1954 – jul 21, 1954)
Description:
The Geneva Accords of 1954 were meetings and discussions on ending conflict between France and Vietnam due to France's continual colonization rule over Vietnam after the end of WWII (Ho Chi Minh thought that the end of the war would also end French colonialism and imperialism).
The result of the continuous meetings with the states (inc. Democratic Republic of Vietnam/Vietming, France, China, Soviet Union, Laos, Cambodia, and the State of Vietnam) was that Vietnam would be divided along the 17th parallel, creating a North Vietnam and a South Vietnam (each side respectfully in charge of their side), and that an election would spark on July 20, 1956, to determine who rules the entirety of the state.
The significance of the Geneva Accords was that the US had embarked on Containment and the Domino Theory-- to stop the spread of communism; however, the "agreements" did not incorporate the supervision of the intervention between Vietminh and the State of Vietnam, which would lead to the Vietnam War, and further the US to be involved with smaller conflicts for containment (with them ultimately loosing in the end).
