Vietnam War (may 7, 1954 – apr 29, 1975)
Description:
The Vietnam War was centered around the North Vietnam government and their allies in South Vietnam, known as Viet Cong, trying to take over the South Vietnam government to unify the state under communist rule (fueled by American Containment, and the spread of Communism).
The United States would intervene with the Vietnam War by siding with South Vietnam in order to stop the spread of communism-- overall, to prevent the "domino effect", which is the idea that if one country fell to communism, others around would too (seen through Laos and Cambodia).
The significance of the Vietnam War in the Cold War era was that the United States had failed their objective of stopping the spread the communism, ultimately causing other states to fall to communism with the withdrawal from Vietnam.
