Immigration Surge (aug 13, 1980 – jan 1, 2000)

Description:

Approximately 28 million immigrants arrived in the U.S. during this period for the same reasons as all immigrants during the previous surges; economic opportunity, and political and religious freedom. Sixteen million came from South America, and nine million came from Asia, and created a new ethnic mix in cities such as New York, Chicago and Atlanta. Many immigrants moved to California and by 2016, the population of California was 27% foreign born. Like all immigrants before them, this eve of immigrants created their own businesses, and kept their religions and cultures which became a part of the American identity. Also, like immigrants before them, many faced prejudice due to nativism and the actions of foreign actors. For example, Muslim Americans faced a backlash and prejudice after 9/11.
