Spanish American War (apr 21, 1898 – dec 10, 1898)
Description:
During this age of Imperialism, the United States was primarily interested in colonizing territories in the Caribbean. Jingoism, intense nationalism focused on intense foreign policy, was beginning to form public opinion of expansionists, who favored the US becoming an imperious list power alongside the countries of Europe to become an influential world power. However opposition to this idea supported by President Cleveland and McKinley believe that military action without a necessity had both moral and economic issues. Yellow journalism promoted pro-war sentiments in the United States by pushing disastrous and scandalous, sometimes untrue and exaggerated headlines to sway public opinion. While the u.s. battleship Maine was in the harbor of Havana, Cuba, it exploded, and while the incident was most likely an accident, the yellow press accused Spain of sabotaging the ship, leading to the Spanish-American War.
