The Peculiar Institution: (jul 18, 1826 – aug 13, 1837)
Description:
The Peculiar Institution was what slavery was reffered to as by some white people in the south who were pro slavery but sensitive about the humanity of slavery, the term was used to justify slavery in their own heads and to ease their conscience . Slavery was considered property and was a measure of wealth, as well as an economic necessity in order to justify it. This shows the growing abolitionist views.
