Social Gospel Movement (jan 1, 1870 – jan 1, 1920)

Description:

A social movement within Protestantism which applied Christian ethics to social problems such as economic inequality, poverty, alcoholism, crime, racial tensions, slums, child labor, poor schools, etc. It was most prominent in North America, where a majority of Protestants resided. Most of the movement's leaders were theologically liberal. Famous leaders include Josiah Strong, Washington Gladden, Walter Rauschenbusch, and Richard T. Ely.
