Hostility Towards Immigrants (jan 1, 1840 – jan 1, 1850)
Description:
As immigration increased, white Americans protestants became increasingly hostile to foreign cultures. Stereotypes of Catholic priests as sexually depraved and Jews as manipulative money lenders grew. The significance is that racial and ethnic violence between immigrants and native born Americans increased which continues to be a problem to this day in urban centers.
