Religious Revival (jan 1, 1940 – jan 1, 1960)

Description:

In postwar United States religion experienced a revival and tremendous growth. People were feeling a great deal of anxiety due to the arms race, the threat of nuclear annihilation, and the threat of "godless" communism from the USSR. Attendance at church served as a counter to the atheism of communism. The significance of the religious revival is that it created a link between religion and Americanism. As a result, Congress in 1954 added "under God" to the pledge of allegiance and mad "In God We Trust" the national motto in 1956.
