Description:

The growth of investment and manufacturing that grew out of industrialization and the transportation and market revolutions resulted in the merging of investors and manufactures to create factory towns in New England. For example, the Lower factory town was established in Lowell Massachusetts. These were planned communities planned by manufactures and consisted of factories, boardinghouses, and churches and daughters of New England farm families worked in them. The significance of this factory towns is that enabled women from rural areas to work outside the home for the first time and also motivated women to launch strikes against longer hours and wage cuts, which served as a springboard for the labor movement.
